Cancun: Playground of the Rich and Famous

Beautiful exotic Cancun, gateway to the Riviera Maya, lies on the Caribbean coast of Mexico in the state of Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula. Basking in year-round sunshine this stunning resort town has been a popular tourist destination for decades. Other attractions in Cancun include the interactive aquarium, where you can make contact with star-fish, manta rays and even sharks and can swim with dolphins. The Isla Contoy is always of great interest to visiting ornithologists being regarded as the most important nesting site in the Mexican Caribbean, being the home to over 150 different species.

Xcaret eco-park, just 46 miles south of Cancun is also well worth a visit. It features archaeological sites, a butterfly pavilion and orchid greenhouses amongst its many attractions. There is also a Mayan village and a jaguar island where the big cats can be observed living unfettered by cages and bars in a leafy natural habitat. The evening performance entitled ‘Xcaret Mexico Espectacular’ showcases music and dance from the ancient Mayan all the way to contemporary Mexican, a magnificent performance not to be missed.

Tours and excursions are widely available in a variety of formats, from the self-drive jeep tour – which still comes with experienced guide and offers the opportunity of cave snorkelling in underground caves; to the profusion of jet-ski or boat tours. Water activities are one of the main attractions at this coastal resort and you can learn many new skills on a Cancun holiday.
